I like the cut of your jib, draken87. And nice post, I like most of the mechanics you've outlined.
the kick is, and should always be a simple "check" to keep the race going, to avoid combat, other than that I agree, hold to block/grab, tap X for weak, Y for heavy (or whatever the controls shall be) sweet simplicity.
I was thinking that "grab" would be an unarmed punch that happened while the opponent made an attack at the same time. This would just grab the weapon, not the opponent obviously. I think this is how the system worked in Road Rash no?
First off i would like to say it is very in the spirit of RR and dam fun even now in its early state
I have been thinking about the combat and feel that if you swing a weapon you should lose control a little more if the weapon is bigger due to the force and effort needed to swing it to begin with and even more loss of control if you swing during boosting or cornering, as all you concentration should be on staying upright not hitting a fellow racer.
My idea for the grabs was when you first grab you both choose a direction to move. If you both choose opposite directions the grab is broken with a little loss of control If you both move into each other then you crash If you move the direction of the other rider and they move away from you then the one moving away looses the battle and then you get a short amount of time to press a button for one of a few things to happen then the other rider crashes and you carry on with the race.
This way it is a fair system that wont allways guarantee a result and equal chance of escape.
The win moves should be like helmet beat, handle bar yank, kick off bike. maybe a special with a few weapons like decapitation with sword and other things like that. But not to extreme as there will be more emphasise on beating up than racing.
To the Devs First Post about grabbing, you can Add it, and it would be real Fun, i'd say to counter to a grab is Kicking the other Biker away.
Also I think you heard it already often, but what about the ability to stick weapons into the enemies Spoke (like in road rash N64)? The disadvantage is, you can knock out your enemy with one hit, but you loose your weapon and if you miss his wheel, you loose speed or something.
Also an idea form N64 Holding attacks. So if you hold your left mouse button you can put your Driver into a "ready to hit" position, to reduce the time needed from pushing the button until the other driver gets hit. You can also add some disadvantages, like the driver is more vulnerable in this Position, or the maneuverability of the bike is for the time reduced
